Age 80 of Harborview Lodge, formerly of Lochaber Mines died peacefully on January 4, 2021 surrounded by family and love. Syd was the chosen son of the late Oswald and Lila "Mae" Russell. He was a man who was there for anyone and everyone no matter the task. He loved his church, was heavily involved with the Knights of Columbus as well as many other church ministries. Syd worked for NSP for 35 years until retirement when he moved back home to be with his family and the grandchild­ren he adored. Syd is survived by his chosen daughter, Marlene (Andy) Rutledge; daughter-in-law, Bonita; stepdaught­er, Florence; grandchild­ren, Kevin, Joshua (Stacey,) Dylan (Natalie), Kenzie, Natasha (Rick), Joey (Courtney), Blake ( Jerrilyn), Tara (Matt), Malcolm (Stephanie), Jonathan (Theresa); 21 great-grandchild­ren; siblings, Aggie (Wally), Florella ( James), Loriane, Betty (Blaine), Beverly (Tom), Margie, Danny (April), Helene, Gerry, Jean-louis; sisters-in-law, Kelly and Dorothy; brother-in-law, John; and many nieces and nephews. Predecease­d by wife, Dorothy "Mae" Russell; stepson, Joe; brothers, Bertram, Bernard, Cryil, Alec, Ozzie; sisters, Fran and Lorna. Funeral service will be held in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Sheet Harbour, on Saturday, January 9th at 11 a.m., Archbishop Martin Currie officiatin­g. Due to COVID-19 the service will be restricted to family and close friends, committal will be directly after in St. James Cemetery in Lochaber Mines; all are welcome to attend with social distancing and masks. Donations in Syd’s name may be made to Harbourvie­w Lodge where he volunteere­d for many years and was his final home. The family could not have asked for better care from the staff and a special thank you to Dr. Don Macdonald Dr. Savari Antony and all the staff in Gardenview Terrace.
