LEGACY OF INFAMY

-

I feel compelled to respond to the Jan.12 letter from D. Gail of Digby. Gail states that a large number of Americans are angry at their government representatives for not investigating what they consider convincing election-fraud allegations. These allegations were in fact brought before several courts, including the Supreme Court, and weighed by Trump-appointed judges. Time and time again, these cases were thrown out of court and the lawyers who brought them were chastised for wasting the court’s time with frivolous and baseless claims.

Gail also lists some of Trump’s accomplishments, one being the speedy development of a vaccine. I believe credit for this success wholly belongs to scientists who have been hard at work all over the world on developing a vaccine (ever since SARS), and researchers in many countries came up with a vaccine at virtually the same time.

It is true the economy, inherited from Obama, was doing well before the pandemic, but it was not doing well for everyone, which is another cause of Americans’ anger. Trump then took that good economy and devastated it by ignoring the pandemic and not giving proper relief to all those who now rely on food banks to feed their families.

Trump was the biggest mistake America ever made. He will live in infamy as the most failed president in history. What he has wrought will live on, long after he is gone. His detractors tried to allay their worries when he was elected by saying: “How much harm can one person do? There are checks and balances and competent people to keep things running.”

That did not pan out so well. I pray America can get back on track; it will not be easy.
