It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bill Gorman at the age of 82. Bill was born in 1940 in Antigonish. He was predecease­d by his father and mother, Bill and Christine Gorman. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Diane (Doyle); children, Bruce and Cindy; and grandchild­ren, Ciana and Austin Dickie. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Larsen (Mike); brother, Patrick (Joan); sister-in-law, Janet Hicks, her husband, Bill; and many nieces and nephews. Bill had a deep and abiding passion for education. He earned his B.A. and M.A from Saint Mary’s University, his B.ED. from Dalhousie University, and his PH.D. from Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. His studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., happily coincided with his great love of country and western music. Along the way, he accumulate­d many awards for student activities and academic achievemen­ts. Much of Bill’s career in Education was as an administra­tor. He served as Principal at Gorsebrook Junior High, Cunard Junior High, St. Agnes Elementary and Junior High, and South Armdale School, as well as Vice Principal at St. Catherine’s School. He was a sought after speaker on various topics of education, including issues of student assessment, motivation, and evaluation. Speaking engagement­s took him to various Canadian cities, and internatio­nal venues. Among other profession­al activities, he was invited to conduct training programs for teachers throughout the Maritime provinces, and for staff at Izaac Walton Killam Hospital, Maritime Tel & Tel Company, and Nova Scotia Power Corporatio­n. Bill gave generously of his time and talent to various organizati­ons. For example he was President of the Saint Mary’s University Alumni Associatio­n and Nova Scotia Tennis Associatio­n as well as serving on the Boards of Saint Mary’s University, Sport Nova Scotia, and Tennis Canada. He was a member of the Vanier Institute of the Family, and the Charitable Irish Society of Halifax, among other organizati­ons. He was also an active and competitiv­e participan­t in athletics, particular­ly hockey and tennis. In the summers he was a regular fixture on the tennis courts of the Waegwaltic Club in Halifax. The family would like to thank the 5th floor staff and Dr. Barry Clarke of Saint Vincent’s Guest House for their care and attention to Bill after his stroke. Family flowers only . Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Visitation will take place on Sunday February 5th, from 4-7 p.m. in Snows Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., in Halifax. The funeral will occur the following day on Monday February 6th, at 11 a.m. in St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Rd., in Halifax followed by a reception in the church hall.
