The Chronicle Herald (Provincial)
HASTE MAKES WASTE
We were astonished and deeply concerned by the willingness expressed by Premier Stephen Mcneil to open Nova Scotia in mid-to-late July to residents of provinces beyond New Brunswick, without first quarantining for 14 days.
We believe that opening our province to travellers from Quebec and Ontario will unnecessarily increase the risk of a second wave, given that both provinces still have more than 100 new cases of COVID-19 daily. We have appreciated the caution shown by the premier and Dr. Robert Strang over the past few months, which has resulted now in few new cases of COVID-19. And we are delighted by the Atlantic bubble.
We can only assume that the justification for this less-than-cautious decision is economic. But will we really be ahead? A second wave would set back our economy, and harm many aspects of our lives, such as closing schools again. It will put renewed pressure once again on our health system, preventing needed elective surgeries from moving forward.
We strongly urge the premier to reconsider this decision.
