Police block off Morris Street

Halifax Regional Police closed Morris Street in Halifax between Queen and Birmingham streets on Tuesday due to a weapons complaint.

Yellow caution tape could be seen for blocks in both directions and numerous police vehicles were on the scene late Tuesday afternoon.

According to an HRP news release, police were called to an address in the 5500 block of Morris at about 3:10 p.m.

Officers could be seen entering the grayish building at 5578 Morris.

May Gong, who runs the nearby Happy Garden Chinese food restaurant, said she saw a lot of police but did not know what happened.

“I just saw two ambulances and two injured people (taken) to hospital,” Gong said in a telephone interview.

“So many police are still out there, so they are doing investigating,” she said.

Officers were also seen on Clyde Street, one street north of Queen, with tape around Nova Grocery. No one answered the listed phone number for the corner store.

There was no official word on injuries as of 4:30 p.m.

Halifax Transit was detouring buses around the area.

Michele Gerard, co-owner of Atlantic News at the corner of Morris and Queen streets, not far from the building involved, said no one at their shop saw whatever led to the police presence

“All we saw were the vehicles arriving,” Gerard said.

“All the vehicles and police officers running, and that's it.”

She said no officers came to the store and they were running business as usual.

“We know people in the building, so we hope everybody's OK,” she said. “There are ambulances gone to the hospital, beyond that I don't know anything.”

Police remained on the scene into the early evening with watch commanders sending out a news release that said the investigation was ongoing but there was no threat to the public.
