Second man from police chase gets bail

Both young men arrested after a highspeed police chase through west-end Halifax on Dec. 9 are now out on bail.

Dawid Denisow, 24, faces a total of 16 firearms-related charges from the pursuit and a subsequent search of his apartment on Willett Street in Halifax.

Denisow was granted bail Friday following a hearing in Halifax provincial court. The Crown opposed Denisow's release, but Judge Elizabeth Buckle accepted the bail plan put forward by the defence.

Buckle released Denisow on a $15,000 bail order with two sureties and conditions of house arrest.

His mother pledged $10,000 in real estate to secure his release, while another woman deposited $5,000 with the court.

The judge ordered Denisow to remain in Nova Scotia and placed him on house arrest at his mother's home in Dartmouth.

He can only leave the property for work, medical emergencies or appointments, and legal commitments, or when in the company of one of his sureties between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Denisow must turn his passport in at the courthouse within two business days and is prohibited from possessing any firearms or having contact with his coaccused, Cameron Mombourquette.

Mombourquette, 23, of Halifax, was released with the Crown's consent Monday after he agreed to post $2,500 cash bail and observe a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

Members of the RCMP'S federal serious organized crime section and emergency response team attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Highway 102 and Dunbrack Street in Halifax on Dec. 9 at about 3 p.m.

The car was pursued by police for about two minutes before it was forced off the road on Elliott Street and the two occupants were arrested.

Multiple unmarked police vehicles followed the car over grass and sidewalks, across several lanes of traffic on Joseph Howe Drive and down a steep embankment onto Elliott Street.

RCMP said a loaded handgun thrown out of the car during the pursuit was recovered and officers seized a significant quantity of drugs, believed to be cocaine, from the vehicle.

Police then searched the Willett Street apartment in Halifax and located a Just Right Carbines 40-calibre, semi-automatic rifle with ammunition.

Mombourquette and Denisow are jointly charged with nine offences involving the handgun, identified in court documents as a Luger 9-mm semiautomatic pistol. Mombourquette is also charged with dangerous driving and fleeing from police in a vehicle, while Denisow faces seven charges in relation to the rifle.

Both men are scheduled to return to court Feb. 3.

RCMP said the traffic stop was part of a federal investigation into organized crime and drug trafficking in Nova Scotia. They said police searched a total of 13 residences in Halifax Regional Municipality.
