International praise for L’acadie Vineyards sparkler

Admittedly biased, Bruce Ewert thinks his rave-generating Prestige Brut Estate is perfect for Thursday night, also known as New Year’s Eve.

The most recent expert to heap praise on the L’acadie Vineyards traditional method sparkler is Daenna Van Mulligen, wine writer and National Wine Awards judge from Vancouver, and owner of the Wine Diva site. She awarded it 93 points.

“I submitted the wine a little while ago. It’s vintage dated, and this is the 2014, which is the current release,” said Ewert, who produced 150 cases of the wine, made from 100 per cent estategrown L’acadie Blanc.

The grapes are harvested from vines at least a decade old, on land bought by Ewert because of the terroir.

“The rock is gravelled and very well drained,” he said.

“We chose it because I wanted to make sparkling from this property for the mineral flavours. Now that the roots are about a metre deep ... those roots are getting deeper and deeper and extracting more of those minerals.”

Like all L’acadie Vineyards wines, the Prestige Brut is certified organic.

“We have a listing at the NSLC, though not all the stores, and that’s where we’re driving people now because our wine shop is not open,” Ewert said.

“And it’s online, as well. We have a new fancy website.”

Wines from L’acadie in Gaspereau are also available at Bishop’s Cellar. The Prestige Brut Estate is $50.

Also enthused about it is national wine judge Janet Dorozynski, who awarded the Prestige Brut Estate 94 points and called it “thrilling and elegant ... bone dry and lively.”

The Decanter World Wine Awards in England awarded it 92 points and a silver medal.
