MARTIN, Robert Wade

-

Age 67, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2020 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in St. John’s, N. L., he was the son of the late Robert and Mildred (Clarke) Martin. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth who was with Robert until he took his last breath; son, Scott who resides in London, England; and many cousins, aunts and uncles. Sadly, Scott was not able to get home for Christmas to see his father due to the COVID-19 variant which shut down all air travel. Robert, known as Wade to his family grew up in Bell Island, N.L., until he was a young teenager. He was especially close to his grandfather Robert and his dad Bob. The family left Bell Island and headed to Eszterhazy, Sask., for a few happy years and then Robert attended college in New Brunswick and lived in Moncton before making Halifax and Dartmouth his home. When his grandfather died, Wade decided to be called by his first name to honour his grandfather, thus became known as Robert after the age of 19. Robert was an active man who loved to ski, fly airplanes, race fast cars in his early years and later on, ride his Harley and sail his boat Avalon. He was a loyal friend and had many long-time friends of 30plus years. Robert loved teaching his son to ski, taking him to Tae Kwon-do until the black belt was secured and he also volunteered to be the president of the Dartmouth Pipe and Drum Band where Scott played the bagpipes. In his 40’s, Robert got involved with the Portland Estates Winterhawks hockey team where he was known as "Captain Bob" and he played hockey well into his 60’s. Robert’s tragic accident rendered him a quadriplegic over three years ago and he handled his fate with humour and dignity. Robert was unbelievably brave. His focus and positive attitude was unparalleled, always looked forward and never took a glance in the rear-view mirror. He cheated death many times during his illness and showed many of us how to enjoy and cherish life even when we have shortcomings. Now that air travel has resumed from the United Kingdom, the funeral will take place in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth on Thursday, January 14th at 2 p.m, Rev. James Haughn officiating. The service will be by invitation only due to COVID-19 restrictions. For those who wish to view this Live Streamed event, please use the link on the funeral home website at service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada or Spinal Cord Injury Canada.
