Human trafficking charges laid against gang leader
CALGARY— An investigation into the leader of a violent drug trade network dubbed “The Family” has uncovered alleged human trafficking of at least two women.
The Calgary Police Service arrested the network’s leader, and others involved in drug distribution, last November following a year-long investigation.
Police said “The Family” was linked to about 80 violent incidents over an 18-month period and the operation involved about 500 people— many of whomwere preyed upon and using substances— to buy and sell drugs.
Investigators said they have since learned the leader and an accomplice were allegedly making money from trafficking women for prostitution. It’s believed two women were trafficked. One woman alleges she was assaulted if she did not complywith demands, said police.
“This group targeted women who were vulnerable to manipulation and control because of their addictions. They preyed on at least two women that we currently knowabout, thoughwe know they had a vast network incalgary,” said Staff Sgt. Jodi Gach in a statement.
Onthursday, police executed a search warrant at a Calgary residence where they located 52-year-old Lawrence Orubor, believed to be the leader of “The Family,” and another individual whomorubor had conditions not to be with.
Orubor had $3,690 cash at the time of the arrest.
He is facing multiple trafficking charges, among others related to assault, material benefit from sexual services and breach of a release order. Orubor was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
