EMBREE, Hilarie Wilena
Age 95, of Halifax, passed away May 6, 2021 in the VG Site, QEII. She was born in Port Hawkesbury, the daughter of the late Jeanne Elisabeth (Baker) and Clarence John Embree. After high school, Hilarie graduated from the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing in March 1948. She spent her entire career as a nurse at the VG except for one year, 1956, when she worked in a hospital in England. Hilarie was an active volunteer with her church, The Presbyterian Church of Saint David. She worked at the Wednesday Chowder Lunches, Holiday Tea fundraisers, and as part of the church’s soup kitchen staff. Her favourite author was Jeffrey Archer, she loved reading his books and later listening to them as her eyesight failed. She loved animals, especially dogs, cats, and horses. She was known for her love of eggnog and cinnamon buns. Hilarie had a large group of friends from Morningside Drive, The Westwood and The Berkeley both on Gladstone Street, her church, and her profession. Hilarie is survived by her nieces, Joan (Richard Mcgloin), Cecilia, Kirsten, Sonja, and Natasha (Ryan) Schreiber; two grandnieces, three grandnephews, one great-grandniece, one greatgrandnephew; and cousins, George, John L. and Elizabeth. She was predeceased by her brothers, Farrall and Garth; and nephew,john in infancy. The family would like to thank all the 9A staff and her team at the VG Site for their excellent care. We would also like to thank Hilarie’s dear friends from Gladstone Street who visited her regularly at The Westwood and The Berkeley. We will be forever grateful. As per Hilarie’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the QEII Health Centre Foundation, The Presbyterian Church of Saint David or a charity of choice.
