FLINN (Murphy), Catherine Elizabeth "Betty"

-

Died peacefully in her Chester, home on Mother’s Day, May 9, 2021. She was 84. Betty was born on April 20, 1937, to Dan and Chrissy Murphy, sharing the role of first born with her twin brother Don. Betty grew up in Halifax, and after graduating from St. Patrick’s High School, earned a Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie University. She then went on to begin a Master’s in Pharmacology. Marrying Bob and beginning their family turned Betty’s eye away from pharmacology, but not from Dalhousie. Betty remained active in the Dal Alumni Association as its president, and then as Director of Alumni Affairs, a position she held in the 1990s. Sociable and active, Betty volunteered with the Junior League of Halifax, numerous political campaigns, and later enjoyed a fruitful career as a Real Estate agent in Chester. More in love with living by the sea than in it, Betty was a good-hearted sailor but always careful to keep her feet dry. She enjoyed ski weekends at Wentworth and ski holidays at Sugarloaf. Her bridge group was a strong band of friends who met around the card tables, or elsewhere, regularly for over 40 years. Betty was a talented sewer, an amateur water colourist, a golfer, a baker and a gracious host. She was never happier than when surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Betty will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by her children, Stuart (Camilla), Lincolnshire, UK; Gavin, Chester; Tracey, Halifax; and Kirsten (Peter), Kamloops, B.C; “Birdie” will also be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Jack Flinn (and his mom Cindy Schultz), Emily and Alexander Roy, Lucy and Ollie Smith, Astrid and Cecilia Flinn. “Bets” is survived by her twin brother, Don, Bowmanville, and her youngest brother Tom, Houston, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Bob; and son-inlaw, John Roy. With consideration of these times, the family will wait until gathering is possible to celebrate Betty’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Health Centre (OHC) Foundation in Chester, or to the charity of your choice.
