JUVENILE PASTIME
I have just finished reading on the CBC website about the Monarchist League’s disappointment with the Canadian government’s “lacklustre” and “embarrassing” preparations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Although congratulations are indeed in order for Her Majesty’s accomplishment of reaching 70 years upon the throne, it is insulting to Canadian taxpayers who are now on the hook for the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall’s visit. It is an insult to the poor, the destitute and, most importantly, the First Nations people of this fine country.
Glorifying royalty is exceptionally juvenile and smacks of classicism and elitism. This is 2022. Canada, along with most of the world, are just now recovering from a two-year pandemic which has caused financial hardship for the vulnerable and the business community. Getting caught up in the Queen’s celebration here in Canada is a total waste of money and time.
Dressing up for tea parties and champagne lunches here in Canada to celebrate a head of state who is a foreigner is ludicrous and smacks of delusions of grandeur.
One would think that the days of Canada and Canadians still acting as grovelling colonials would be a thing of the past. It’s time to stop playing “make believe” for the members of the Monarchist League just so a few entitled and unrealistic members can feel “fascinating.” The Queen, whom I do admire, will not even be aware of all the celebrations or lack of celebrations throughout the Commonwealth.
And before one makes the assumption that I am a Royal Family hater, let me reassure you that I do indeed have admiration for the Queen’s longevity on the throne, but feel it is time for Canada to become a republic and do away with a sovereign head of state.
Your league has no use whatsoever and serves no purpose for Canada or Canadians. It is simply a club for nouveau riche snobs.
Stop trying to waste taxpayers’ money on frivolous holidays for the Royal Family. It is truly archaic and embarrassing.
