Burrows makes history with 73 saves

Northern Subway Selects goalie Jorja Burrows made Esso Cup history on Thursday night, unfortunat­ely, it came in a 4-3 loss to the Regina Rebels.

Burrows made an astounding 73 saves to set the record at the Hockey Canada under-18 female championsh­ip in Vernon, B.C. The previous mark was 57 saves by Maggie Johnston (Mid-isle) in 2017.

Berlin Lolacher scored twice for the Rebels, while Kendall Doiron, Brooke Williams and Hali-rose Maclean replied for the Selects.

The Selects finished fifth in the preliminar­y standings with five points, with a regulation win, an overtime win and three losses.

In semifinal games on Friday, the Edmonton Jr. Oilers played the North York Storm and Regina took on the Thompsonok­anagan Lakers.

The host Sydney Mitsubishi Rush dropped their fourth game at the Telus Cup national under-18 hockey championsh­ip in Membertou on Thursday night.

The Markham Waxers of Ontario downed Sydney 9-2 at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre.

Tate Collins had a five-point performanc­e, which included a goal and four assists, while Philip Govedaris netted two goals and an assist. Nathaniel Adams, Adam Soliman, Matthew Johnson, Isaac Oldenhof, Mason Cruzet and Kyle Butt also added goals for the Waxers.

Brady Matheson and Kayden Robitaille replied with goals for the Rush.

The Rush wrapped up preliminar­y play on Friday night against the Kensington Wild in a battle of teams looking for their first win.

The Magog Cantonnier­s of Quebec lead the standings with a 4-0-0 record, followed by the Calgary Buffaloes (3-01), Markham (2-1-1) and the Brandon Wheat Kings (2-2-0).
