Local bowler wins international championship

- ERIN JAMIESON thewire@saltwire.com @SaltWireNetwork Erin Jamieson is a resident of Brookfield who is eager to share the happenings of the community with all ages.

Very talented local Brookfield bowler Gerry Dunn continues to add to his impressive resumé. He is already a fivetime world champion and last month he won the Men’s International Candlepin Team Championship tournament, which was held in Moncton, N.B., with his team A+ Accounting. He has been a dedicated bowler for over 40 years and has recorded three 200 series in his career (206, 209 and recently 214). Dunn’s highest season ending average is 132. Make sure to congratulate Dunn on his success the next time you see him.

The Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex canteen has welcomed Barnyard Grill to the facility. Their delicious food will be available to the public on Friday nights, Saturday and Sunday, and Monday nights. They are certainly well known in the Colchester area, and we are happy to have them serve our local community members here in Brookfield.

The Brookfield Curling Club has brought back the popular Thursday Wing Night. Stop by the curling club lounge on Dec. 21 or Jan. 4 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Wing night will be held every other Thursday over the winter months. With a drink purchase, the special is $1.25 per wing. This is a great way to support the curling club by coming out and socializing with your friends and eating some tasty wings.

A sincere and heartfelt thank you is sent to everyone who has supported the Community Christmas House Tours organized by Knox United’s Unit 3 over the last 26 years. Appreciation is extended to the many dedicated volunteers — the talented crafters and artists, the hardworking kitchen helpers, the chauffeur drivers and those who have bought tickets. The amount of time, energy and Christmas spirit that has gone into the tours has been outstanding. The tours started back in 1996 as a church fundraiser. There have been well over 75 families and many local businesses who have graciously opened their doors to the community to proudly display their decorations and offer some wonderful hospitality. They hope this worthy tradition continues with new and enthusiastic leadership.

Christmas is quickly upon us and for many church is an important part of celebrating the holy season. Sunday, Dec. 24, is also the Fourth Sunday of Advent. There are many opportunities to worship this Christmas in Brookfield. Pastor Steve Bedard will lead morning service at the Brookfield Baptist Church at 11 a.m. and a candlelight service at 7 p.m. Knox United is holding service at 9:30 a.m. and also at 6:30 p.m. Our friends up the road at the Middle Stewiacke United church will have a 11:15 a.m. service and an evening 8 p.m. service. Rev. Michael Henderson will lead the worship services at both the United Churches. Gather your family, friends and neighbours and please consider attending any of the services offered this Christmas.

As 2023 comes to a close (quite quickly, I might add) I, too, will be closing a chapter in my life. This will be my last article. I can’t believe this is the 24th one that I have written! The invitation to chronicle and submit the Brookfield news was an interesting and exciting offer as I had no previous writing experience. I have had a lot of fun sharing the activities and events of our small but mighty community with you all. I have been surprised with the amount of positive feedback I have received. I proudly live, work and am involved in many aspects of life in Brookfield. Thank you for the kind gestures and nice comments — some from complete strangers. Your support has been appreciated. I challenge everyone to step out of your comfort zone and try something new in 2024. The reward usually outweighs the risk, and the joy is in the journey. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.
