What are the new rules now that Amherst Stadium’s walking track is open?

- DARRELL COLE darrell.cole@saltwire.com @SaltWireNetwork

The walking track at the Amherst Stadium has reopened, but it’s not business as usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first of the changes is the walking track will only be available for use on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10 and 11 a.m. and 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., and the number of walkers permitted for each session will be limited to 10.

Participants will also have to book a session by calling 902-667-3352 or emailing info@amherst.ca. The booking, which requires a name and phone number for contact tracing purposes, may be given up to one hour before the start time.

A user can only book one walking session at a time, but can book sessions for others provided the names and phone numbers of the other walkers are given at the time of the booking.

Walkers will enter and exit the stadium through the southside doors. The doors will open five minutes before the start time of the session and there will be designated stairs for people to use to reach the walking track.

People who are mobility challenged are asked to make that known during booking so staff can open the main front door to allow them access.

Masks will be mandatory when walkers enter the stadium, but will not be required once a person is walking on the track.

The town encourages social distancing, but it is not required.

Passing will be allowed and should occur on the right side of the person being passed. The direction of travel will be marked on the track and running is not permitted. In addition, walkers will not be permitted to access the seating in the stands. Chairs will be positioned on the second level for the use of walkers.

People are encouraged to bring their own water bottles as the water fountain will not be available. A washroom on the second floor will be available.
