NEW RULES FOR REMEMBRANCE DAY

Remembrance Day ceremonies will be different this year due to COVID-19 regulations and the need for social distancing.

In Amherst, the colour party from Branch 10 of the Royal Canadian Legion will form at the cenotaph just before 11 a.m. for the laying of the wreaths, national anthem, Last Post and Reveille and two minutes of silence.

From there, the party will move to Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church for a closed service to lay the remainder of the wreaths.

There is no public Remembrance Day service.

Residents can attend the cenotaph service, but social distancing rules and other COVID-19 protocols must be followed.

OXFORD COUNCIL TO FILL VACANCIES

Oxford could hold a special election on Saturday, Jan. 16 to fill two vacant positions on town council.

When Oxford held its municipal election on Oct. 17, 11 people picked up nomination papers but only four names came forward at the nomination deadline.

Those four candidates were elected by acclamation and Greg Henley was elected mayor, replacing Trish Stewart who retired after eight years as mayor.

The Municipal Election Act requires a special election to be held as closely as possible to the procedure governing a regular election. Based on making a final decision Nov. 16, the town would have until Jan. 30 to have the vote.
