Owls’ boys and girls medal at provincials

- By Daily Courier Staff

The KSS Owls curling teams both reached the podium at provincials over the weekend.

The boys won gold thanks to a convincing 12-2 win over St. George’s in the championship game, while the girls brought home bronze despite losing their second-place game to Riverside of Port Coquitlam.

After a slow start, losing their first game in an extra end, the boys reeled off six straight victories to be crowned.

That included wins of 8-2 over host Smithers, 14-1 over Quesnel and 7-1 over Riverside in advancing to the final against St. George’s.

The KSS boys team was comprised of all Grade 12 students in skip Logan Miron, third Ewan Murray, second Ramsay Murray and lead Bryan Cresswell. They were coached by Justin Nillson.

The KSS girls team came away with mixed results, beating Sir Winston Churchill 10-4 and Ballenas of Parksville 6-5, but losing twice to Riverside, including 6-3 in roundrobin play.

The girls settled for third place, but that was quite the accomplishment since only one member of the KSS team had any competitive experience prior to this season.

The Owls were skipped by Katelyn McGillivray, with Erika Ellis as second, Anna Trigalet as third, Naomi Hayward as lead and Grace Milligan as an alternate. The girls were coached by Bob Harris, and Lorne Buna sponsored both teams.
