Party like it’s International Women’s Day

- ANNA JACYSZYN

Today is International Women’s Day when we, and I include men, take this day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women.

It thrills me as I witness the female gender rise in recognition because a woman’s power is unique. Female strengths come because of our differences from men, and we literally have the control to birth a new generation of exceptional humans that, with mindful education, will nurture the earth we live on and teach a new generation that acceptance of our individuality are the tools to thrive. Tonight we party, and there is no excuse to stay in this week, because this town is busy.

Today from 5:30 p.m. onwards, Kelowna Women in Business will present Mindset Mastery For Business Growth.

If you are a woman in business, this discussion is to help understand how to create more success by changing the female entrepreneurial mind-set.

There will be a group of panelists who will be tested and mentored, using their individual personality traits and skill sets, to devise solutions that impact the decisions they make daily more profitably.

The results will then be revealed to the attending guests. The evening ís moderator is Katherine Britton ñ senior business adviser with the Womenís Enterprise Centre. Panelists include Sarah Morton, Angela Nagy and Tracey Cochrane. The event takes place at the Kelowna Golf & Country Club. Tickets can be purchased at kwib.org for $49 and include a sit-down dinner.

Now, think fabulous female vocalist. The Jazz Cafe Presents Andrea Superstein. This feisty chanteuse is starting her B.C. tour in Kelowna tonight at Wine and Art, 315 Lawrence Ave.

The trio of Superstein, Jen Lewin on piano and drummer Nino DiPasquale will entertain us with jazz stylings and creative vocal designs showcasing a handful of new original compositions, songs from her current record What Goes On, with fine-tuned versions of Fleetwood Mac and Bob Dylan through a jazz lens.

This is an intimate pop-up concert with an entrance fee of $20 for pre-reserved seating or $25 at the door until sold out. Call 778-484-2781 or info@wa-kelowna.com

Red Dot Players bring Sense and Sensibility to the Okanagan College stage with a 2016 revised Broadway version of this classic Jane Austen story.

Austen has ëgirl powerí to rival any living woman in present day. She wrote thousands of letters and stories, quite often with acid or forthright comments and honest depictions of truth, when women were not supposed to speak or think like that.

This is Austen ís first published story about the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. The play begins when their stepfather dies, leaving three sisters and their widowed mother poor.

The two eldest daughters are titular opposites and both ripe for marriage, which creates a story that is fun and full of love, romance and heartbreak.

Under the direction of English professor Jeremy Beaulne, this play will run for only four nights at the KLO campus theatre, 1000 KLO Rd. Beginning Thursday and running until Sunday - with curtains up at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are available at Mosaic Books, the Okanagan College campus store and will also be available at the door: $18 for adults/$15 students/seniors. Visit; reddotplayers.com for more information.

When I think of powerhouse women that are feminine, clever, witty and well-spoken, my mind canít help but think of Okanagan Symphony Orchestra music director Rosemary Thomson.

This fiery red-head works hard at organizing season after season of the classical music program that not only attracts other genres of music and musicianship, but makes us dummies feel clever by the way the songs are presented and spoken about.

I love attending the OSO talks and concerts and feeling like I understand, and although its way over my head, it’s enjoyable and the music makes me happy.

This weekend, the symphony is presenting Colours of Russia, featuring the greatest of the great Russian composers, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Modest Mussorgsky.

Special guest artist for this concert series is pianist Minsoo Sohn, who is praised for his masterful virtuosity and deep musicianship.

This will be the second time he has joined the OSO and those who remember him from the last time, have most likely bought their tickets to this concert already.

Also in the repertoire is Blaze by Juno award winning Canadian composer Vivian Fung.

The symphony plays Friday in Kelowna, Saturday in Penticton and Sunday in Vernon. Tickets available through local ticket outlets or okanagansymphony.com.
