B.C. Tory candidate named for Vernon-Monashee riding
Nelson Harrington has been in the construction business in the Okanagan for many years, and now he is joining the political realm as the BC Conservative candidate for Vernon-Monashee.
“I’ve been fairly politically involved on the sidelines for years,” said Harrington. “I just really hadn’t thought about getting involved until a few of my friends pressed me over the years.”
A couple of years ago, Harrington decided it might be time to give politics a try.
“I see myself as a bit of a grassroots advocate for change,” he said. “I think the best place I can put my efforts is advocacy and being a voice.”
Harrington’s focus will be on small businesses and small-scale farming, he said.
“The consistent issue that I’ve heard is that small farmers feel under-represented and a lot of them are struggling, and I think since that’s where a lot of our food comes from we should pay more attention to it.”
Party president Corbin Mitchell announced Harrington’s nomination.
“The endorsement of a fine candidate with deep family values, private-sector work experience and lots of community involvement is another sign that the BC Conservative Party will be competitive in numerous constituencies around the province,” said Mitchell in a statement.
The BC Conservatives have not named a leader to run in the upcoming provincial election, but more information about that should be coming in the next few weeks, said Harrington.
The provincial election is scheduled for May 9.
