Judge out of touch with reality

-

Editor: Almost weekly, I am amazed at the things our legal (justice) system is perpetrating on the Canadian people.

I don’t think it comes as any surprise that the majority of our society, including doctors, RCMP, and politicians, are doing everything possible within their purview to stop the onslaught of deaths from opioids, and more succinctly, the fentanyl that is being brought into our community and into the province.

What shocked me even more than the 1,000 deaths that have been attributed to fentanyl overdose, was the fact a judge released a man and his partner, who were caught with Oxycontin, Percocet, fentanyl and a pill compress machine that could make up to 2,500 pills an hour. Also confiscated were gold bars and a large amount of cash, both suspected to be proceeds of criminal activity.

The RCMP stated the perpetrator had been importing fentanyl from China, and has likely made hundreds of thousands of pills laced with fentanyl. For all of this, the judge released him in February on a $15,000 bail, and promise to appear in May.

This is so out of touch with the rest of society, that I find it impossible to imagine that some sort of intervention has not taken place: This is not the way to prevent further victimization of those most vulnerable
