Sandbag removal to cost more than necessary

-

Editor: I would like to comment to the latest statements from the Central Okanagan regional district regarding the disposal of sandbags that must now be trucked away — at a cost to whom?

As usual, it will be the taxpayers, due to the chance that contaminants from the flood waters are in the sand.

My question is if sandbags are contaminated by flood waters, what about the ground below them? Are we to remove that also?

I have learned bacteria in the sand, soil, etc. is transformed by enzymes and sunlight to non-hazardous material.

Same process as when manure is spread on fields in layers less than 18 inches (46 cm) thick. This saves some of our resources and lowers pollution by not burning fossil fuels to truck all this stuff away. To the people in charge, please use common sense and not our limited tax money.

My comments also apply to the idea of collecting garbage every two weeks instead of every week.

These changes will most likely create more discharge of garbage at places where we don’t want it, and increase the cost of removing it from the forest and parks, etc.

A recent survey showed the public’s approval of civil servants and politicians has dropped. Used car sales people now have a better rating than politicians.

With respect to all who display of common sense, keep up the good work. Per Christophersen, West Kelowna
