Expansion done, resort reopens

- By JAMES MILLER

Just in time for Canada Day, the first guests officially checked in Friday afternoon to the new expansion of the Penticton Lakeside Resort.

Five of the six floors are now open to guests and the penthouse will be completed and ready to receive visitors by next Wednesday.

In total, 54 of 70 rooms were made available to guests.

“It’s nice to be open, it’s about time,” Lakeside general manager David Prystay said.

“It was a long haul and thanks to the team at Greyback Construction for getting it done on time, thanks to Nick Bevanda, architect extraordinaire and thanks to our awesome staff. Everyone has worked hard to create a world-class facility.”

The stand-alone building is one of the largest wooden structures in B.C.

Unlike the world-record, 18storey building in Vancouver, Prystay said the Lakeside’s unique feature is the wood is exposed and visible from the exterior of the building.

“Due to the uniqueness of this building we’ve had sites from Europe and Japan and all over the States make inquiries and some will be coming to view it in person,” he said.

The Lakeside now has 272 rooms. With the expansion comes new hires in maintenance, housekeeping, bellmen and front desk clerks.

It’s the first significant expansion since the Hooded Merganser restaurant was completed in the early 2000s.
