Record shop concert series needs bigger venue

- ANNA JACYSZYN ArtaFact

Tonight, Milkcrate Records is presenting the first of a series of live music programs at a new location.

They used to be held in the downtown record shop, but as popularity has grown, so has the need for a bigger space.

This space is Kelowna Forum, 1317 Ethel St.

The inaugural concert is formed around the young and talented pianist Bjorn Kriel who has invited some heavy hitters to create a band for this concert tonight.

Along with his friend and musical colleague Jason Martin on drums, you will see popular names like Craig Thomson (saxophone), Darko Cuk (double bass) and Loni Moger (guitar).

Smart choices for this high achieving musician who is forging a name for himself in the jazz genre.†

He will be performing original and some of his favourite bebop free jazz arrangements that are becoming his signature.

I am looking forward to hearing what will transpire on that stage tonight.

Tickets are $20 and $15 for students. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins at 8 p.m. ————— When I was a young preteen (many summers ago) on my summer break from school I struggled with what to do with my time.

My mum still had to work, dad was busy and we didn’t really go on vacations, so I relied on friends to occupy my time or summer jobs to make money for outfits to wear for the first weeks of school.

These days, there are so many organized day camps and summer arts events that it’s easy to fill the days with fun that is wellrounded.

Parents with children who are looking to find activities not centred around a computer game app can find organized events like SASFY: Summer Arts Scene For Youth, which is happening from Aug. 8-14.

This year, with the change of location from Lake Country to Springvalley Middle School on Ziprick Road, children 8 to 16 can register for this week-long arts program.

With a variety of choices from culinary classes, voice, dance, drama, sculpture, woodwork, drumming, to name a few, kids spend two hours at each course before moving on to the next activity they signed up for.

Between each course, there is a snack break or lunch, provided for as it’s included in the fee.

There is even a shuttle bus to ferry students to and from West Kelowna or Lake Country.

Visit sasfy.ca to get a detailed look into who and what each class is about, as well as online registration, fees etc.

As the song goes, SASFY is for me, SASFY makes me happy, ain’t that the truth, I’m digging the Summer Arts Scene For Youth.

————— Another wonderful experience organized through The Kingfisher Interpretive Centre is Learn to Fish event on Sunday July 23 form 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

This activity is geared toward kids 15 and under and offers an opportunity for kids to catch a fish.

It takes place at 2550 Mabel Lake Rd. (40 kilometres east of Enderby).

Local angling experts will volunteer their time to provide a firsthand fishing experience and an opportunity for instruction on casting techniques, fish-handling practices, fish identification, fly tying and more.

What a unique chance to learn the ins and outs of fishing.

There will be food, other activities and many prizes to give away and its all just for the cost of the gas to drive there, because the event is free.

Food will be offered by donation and if you have your own fishing gear or can borrow a friend’s, that would be best, but some equipment will be on hand to borrow.

If you have any questions about this event, contact the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre at 250-8380004. Or visit the website at kingfishercentre.com. ————— Also happening all week in West Kelowna is the Evolve Scooter and Skateboard Camp for kids between 7-14 years of age.

Riders bring a skateboard or scooter, helmet, elbow pads, wrist guards and kneepads to master tricks.

It’s held at the West Kelowna Skateboard Park. Call 250-868-3119 or email bcsskel@shaw.ca to register, as well as ask about the whole summer activity catalogue.

————— Tomorrow night, July 20, the OK Corral is organizing a Wildfire Relief Fundraiser at their venue at 1978 Kirschner Rd.

There will be live music with the Lost n Found Band and admission is by donation — all money and items donated will be delivered by convoy to families who have lost everything.

Online donations can be found through the Facebook event page Wildfire Relief Convoy #BCStrong. The event begins at 9 p.m. Anna Jacyszyn is an awardwinning jazz singer. Email her at artafactevent@gmail.com.
