Take a breath, then create your outdoor retreat

- By DIANNE HABER

It’s not too late to create your relaxing, outdoor retreat. We are so lucky here in the Okanagan that our summer starts early and extends well into September. (This year being an exception.) I think we’re definitely in the clear to get that al fresco dining area well under way.

If you aren’t at a stage to gut your backyard just yet, there are several ways to make small changes to create a beautiful, outdoor utopia.

You don’t have to break the bank. Keep in mind, once you have a plan in place, you can add items incrementally each season until you reach your desired decor level.

If you are working with existing patio furniture, start with a good quality stylish outdoor area rug. There are hundreds to choose from.

Pick a pattern and colour scheme that complements your space and existing furniture. A fabulous pop of colour can really make a boring space come alive.

If you have a separate dining area and sitting area, consider combining different rugs for more interest.

A bold pattern can really be fun way to spice up a boring dining table. With the addition of great toss pillows and colourful candle holders, Voila! Consider the material that your new rug is made of before investing. Synthetic material, such as polypropylene is very hardy and can withstand the amount of UV rays it will be exposed to.

Most are mildew-resistant and can be hosed down easily to keep a crisp clean appearance. Any rug that is in an uncovered area should be rolled up and stored at the end of the season.

Make sure it’s completely dry before storing. Synthetics are also fairly lightweight so it can be moved around easily if necessary.

There are also natural fibre selections (Jute, Sisal or Seagrass), but keep in mind these options are typically used in more medium use areas and are usually indoor or in covered areas.

Jute especially does not hold up in wet conditions. If you like the nubby or braided texture the “au naturel” rugs offer, you can still achieve that look in synthetic.

I love colour and pattern. I invested in two large rugs about three years ago that still have the same great colour as the day I unrolled them.

I change up my decor depending on my mood that season, but I started with a vibrant tangerine colour that I’ve carried throughout with lanterns, throws around the firepit, pillows and my new addition this year, a re-purposed dresser painted with exterior paint and now drawers full of flowers.

Find your comfort level (or better yet, bust out of your comfort level) and create your own colourful outdoor living space.
