What would it be like to have fairy-tale characters as classmates?

-

Kelowna is getting a new school named Fairy Tale High.

Kids can go to school with Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Prince Charming and even Aladdin.

The catch? It is only open for a few days and it can only be seen on stage.

Following up on their hit play, A 1970’s Cinderella, New Vintage Theatre presents their new show Fairy Tale High this August.

This innovative play, directed by Graham Daley and written by Bonnie Gratz and her students from Rutland Senior Secondary, features over 20 up and coming emerging Okanagan actors and crew-all under the age of 25.

“Last summer, we had such a great response to our plays The Great Gatsby and Grease which featured many talented young artists so this year we decided to take that to a new level,” said Gratz, “Graham Daley has also shown great promise as our artistic associate and we were eager to give this enthusiastic talent the opportunity to direct.”

Fairy Tale High is about the dynamics that happen between famous fairy tale characters like Cinderella and Ariel who go to school together, but is based in Kelowna. Filled with fun Canadian songs, with choreography by Danny Tagle (Rock of Ages) and local lore, Fairy Tale High also includes a message Daley believes is important as kids move through the summer and towards school days.

“Fairy Tale High carries a beautiful message. It is our differences and even tough times make us stronger and ultimately that is the best story of all.”

The show is also innovative as kids will be invited to be a part of the play.

Shows are Aug. 4-5 at 2 and 7 p.m. at the Mary Irwin Theatre in the Rotary Centre for the Arts.

Tickets are available through the Rotary Centre box office.

Outdoor shows will be at City Park on Aug. 6 and Gyro Beach on Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. Details can be found on Festivals Kelowna’s website.

New Vintage Theatre is a not-for-profit, professional company.
