Murder trial continues in judge’s chambers

Just when trial of 3 men charged in killing of Jonathan Bacon will be back in court isn’t known

-

There was no court time this week as the Kelowna trial of the three men accused in the 2011 slaying of gangster Jonathan Bacon continued mostly in judge’s chambers.

Such asides are called conferences. They are not held in the courtroom, where the media and public can attend. So, we don’t know what the conferences were about.

Usually, such conferences are a chance for the Crown, defence lawyers and the judge to hash out logistics before the trial goes public again.

When exactly that will be is unknown. It could be Tuesday at the earliest.

The trial of Jason McBride, Michael Jones and Jujhar Singh Khun-Khun started at the Kelowna Law Courts May 15.

Since then, there was a two-week break last month and the trial takes a three-day weekend every week, so there are no proceedings on Fridays.

Bacon, a member of the Red Scorpions crime gang, was killed when the Porsche SUV he was in with four others was sprayed with gunfire in August 2011 by men in a Ford Explorer.

The crime was massive news in Kelowna, and across the province, because it was gangland related and happened in broad daylight in front of the Delta Grand hotel when lots of tourists and locals were milling about.

McBride, Jones and Khun-Khun were arrested in February 2013 and charged with murder for Bacon’s death and attempted murder of the four others in the Porsche, including Hells Angel Larry Amero and Independent Soldier James Riach.
