On Sunday, West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to a marina incident in the 1500 block of West Harbour boulevard, where a boat became partially submerged after being launched.

The incident was stabilized with help from Kelowna Fire Departments Marine Rescue MR2 and the Ministry of Environment. There was a minor amount of fuel in the water contained by crews using booms and absorbent cloths specific to the fuel type.

The incident was considered accidental, according to WKFR.

Enjoying lakes and rivers is a great way to beat the heat, but water activities can be risky. That’s why B.C. Hydro is reminding the public how to safely make a splash this summer at B.C. Hydro recreation areas.

B.C. Hydro operates 19 recreation areas across the province, such as the Shuswap River, where more than 1.6 million visitors come to boat, fish, and swim each year.

While B.C. Hydro encourages fun in the sun and water, it’s reminding the public to exercise caution using lakes, rivers and reservoirs near its generating facilities as water levels and flows change quickly. For personal safety, avoid designated danger zones around reservoirs and obey posted signs.

B.C. Hydro also advises following these tips to stay safe every time you are near water:

• Never leave children unsupervised while they are in or near the water. Children and non-swimmers should wear a personal flotation device.

• Watch for changes in the weather and check the forecast before starting out on the water.

• Provide an approved personal floatation device for everyone in a boat or canoe, even an inflatable model.

• Be aware that water levels and flows may change suddenly. Sirens and strobe lights may be used to alert that water levels will soon be changing.

• Keep outside of safety booms and buoys, and away from all dam structures.

• Watch for floating debris and submerged hazards.
