Police watchdog probes Sicamous arrest
An independent investigation agency is investigating Sicamous RCMP following an incident Tuesday morning.
At 11:26 a.m., Sicamous RCMP responded to a car wash on Maier Road, where a man was allegedly threatening to kill himself.
The man was located with what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds, according to a police press release.
The man ran from police while allegedly continuing to injure himself with a weapon.
An officer ran after the man into a nearby gas station parking lot while instructing the man to drop his weapon.
The officer, equipped with a con- ducted energy weapon, continued speaking to the man until the man got to his knees on the ground.
The officer did not deploy the weapon, and the man was apprehended, said police.
Police provided first aid to the man until emergency health services arrived shortly after.
The man was taken to hospital for medical assessment. No one else was injured. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. was notified and is now investigating whether or not there is a connection between the man’s injuries and the actions of police.
Any witnesses are asked to contact the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. at 1855-446-8477.
