Keeping the Wild in Wilden

-

Since running low on single family lots and selling out of townhomes in early 2017, the Wilden planning department is working full speed on creating new neighbourhoods.

More than 100 single-family lots are planned to be released in 2018 and more in successive years. Plus there are several multi-family developments on the drawing board.

Work will also commence on the Wilden Market Square located off Union Road.

The variety of amenities that will be gathered here, including shops and services, cafés, elementary school, and public park alongside a beautiful pond will enrich life for all Wilden residents.

The Wilden master plan, in place since the late 1990s, ensures that new development will not compromise the essence of Wilden life in any way.

Approximately half the land will be preserved as open space or public park.

From the early stages of development it was clear that providing wildlife with a speciesappropriate habitat would always be a guiding principle in Wilden’s sensitive growth. Investments in wetland enhancement are ongoing.

Several ponds in Wilden have already become a haven for many species of birds and aquatic life, and more ponds will be restored in upcoming years.

But it is not just about the ponds; accessibility and connectivity is vital to a healthy wildlife population. To help facilitate wildlife movement between wetlands and provide a safe passage for deer, green corridors and underpasses beneath the roads are being incorporated in the development.

Families living in Wilden enjoy a realm of opportunities to spend time outdoors, get in touch with nature and observe wildlife.

To spark their curiosity and give them more information, writer Flora McLeod regularly enriches the Wilden website blog with articles about the animals that can be found in the area.

Racoons, owls, coyotes, turtles, crows, squirrels and many more have already been covered. Every month Flora writes about a new wild animal residing in Wilden.

Wilden will continue to be one of these rare places in the world where you can stay in touch with nature and live in a natural setting with stunning views while being just 10 minutes away from a vibrant city.
