Oilers only unbeaten team at Young Stars

Canucks clobbered by Calgary, next face Edmonton in finale

-

The Edmonton Oilers probably wish they could play in Penticton more often.

The Oilers remained undefeated at 9-0-2 since 2013 at the annual Young Stars Classic tournament with two more victories at the South Okanagan Events Centre on the weekend.

Edmonton beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-0 in the lone game Saturday after doubling the Calgary Flames 4-2 in the Battle of Alberta to open the tourney on Friday.

The Vancouver Canucks dropped to 1-1 after falling to the Flames 6-2 in the lone game on Sunday. The Canucks defeated Winnipeg 4-2 on Friday.

The tourney, featuring many of the top prospects from the four Western Canadian NHL teams, wraps up with two games today, with the Flames and Jets meeting at 10:30 a.m. and the Canucks and Oilers doing battle at 2 p.m.

SUNDAY — Flames 6 Canucks 2: Spencer Foo netted two goals as Calgary evened its record at 1-1 in an afternoon matchup.

Zach Fischer, Adam Ruzicka, Brett Pollock and Matthew Phillips, into an empty net, also scored for the Flames, who led 2-0 and 4-2 at the intermissions.

Pollock scored a highlight-reel goal on a magnificent end-to-end rush to make it 5-2 early in the third.

Aaron Irving and Yan-Pavel Laplante scored for Vancouver to briefly tie the game at 2-2 in the second before Ruzicka put Calgary ahead for good.

Nick Schneider made 24 saves for the Flames, while Michael DiPietro had 28 stops for the Canucks.

SATURDAY — Oilers 3 Jets 0: Stuart Skinner made 26 saves for the shutout as Edmonton defeated Winnipeg.

Luke Coleman and Chad Butcher scored to give the Oilers a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes, and Joseph Gambardella sealed the deal with an empty-net goal late in the third.

FRIDAY — Oilers 4 Flames 2: Thirdperiod goals by Butcher, Evan Polei and Kirill Maksimov rallied Edmonton past Calgary.

Butcher had two goals and his line with Maksimov and Davis Koch combined for seven points.

Jusso Valimaki and Mark Jankowski scored for the Flames, who led 2-1 after two periods following a scoreless first stanza. Dylan Wells made 26 saves to get the win. Canucks 4 Jets 2: Kelowna Rockets forward Kole Lind notched an empty-net goal and two primary assists as Vancouver defeated Winnipeg.

Griffin Molino had what proved to be the winner late in the first and Jonah Gadjovich and Jalen Chatfield also scored for the Canucks, who led 3-1 and 3-2 at the period breaks.

Antoine Crete-Belzile and Jansen Harkins replied for the Jets.

Thatcher Demko backstopped the win for Vancouver.
