Regatta for disabled sailors gets underway
Canada’s regatta for disabled sailors, the ReMax Mobility Cup, starts today in the waters of Okanagan Lake. More than 40 entrants from around North America will compete in the event, designed to promote inclusiveness in sports and encourage athletic excellence.
“Skills will definitely be put to the test, and I’m looking forward to a lot of fun all week,” said local competitor Howard Scott.
Dozens of volunteers have been working since January 2016 to organize the racing competition, to be held in Kelowna for the first time since its inception in 1991.
“With contributions from so many, it will be fantastic to see everyone arriving to enjoy the fruits of our labours,” said Tracy Delorme, cochair of the ReMax Mobility Cup.
Sailors are coming from as far away as California, Vermont and St. John’s, N.L., to demonstrate their skills.
Competitors will be racing Martin 16 boats, which are described as extremely stable and customized for use by sailors with a variety of disabilities.
The Kelowna Yacht Club has raised money in a variety of ways to help with the staging of the ReMax Mobility Cup.
“While having some disabled members participating in regular club racing is commendable, to have their own regatta is the ultimate high,” said Henry Harlos, yacht club commodore.
The opening ceremony for the competition was held last night, with racing starting today and continuing through Friday.
