Heat women open up with 2 road losses

-

The UBC Okanagan women’s soccer team travelled a long way on the weekend, only to come home with a pair of losses.

The Heat allowed a pair of firsthalf goals on Sunday afternoon and were doubled up 2-1 by the UNBC Timberwolves in Prince George.

The decision followed a 3-0 loss Friday night in Edmonton to the MacEwan Griffins.

UBCO’s lone goal came in the 78th minute against the Timberwolves, when Andrea Stinson made a brilliant run and fed Susan Traynor, who beat Brooke Molby with a shot off the inside of the right post.

“It was just one of those days,” said Stinson, the Heat captain. “We had a lot of shots. We didn’t let them out of their half much, but just one of those days.

“The first half was a bit iffy, but we turned it around in the second and I think we could have won. UNBC did a really good job of switching the play by bringing us to one side and then making us run all the way to the other.”

The Heat (0-2-0) are tied for seventh in the Pacific Division after their first weekend of play.

The Timberwolves (2-0) are in a three-way tie with UBC and MacEwan atop the Pacific Division with six points.

The Heat hit the road for another long trip this weekend, making their first ever trip to Saskatchewan to face the Regina Cougars (0-0-2) on Saturday and the Saskatchewan Huskies (1-1-0) on Sunday. Both matches are 11 a.m. PDT starts.

MEN’S SOCCER

A pair of goals for the Trinity Western Spartans were too much for the UBC Okanagan Heat men’s side to overcome on the road Saturday night.

The final score was 2-1 for the Spartans, with the difference maker coming in the 89th minute to break a 1-1 tie.

The first half was a draw as neither side was able to push a marker past the capable keepers.

The lone goal for the Heat was scored by freshman Sam MacDonald in the 63rd minute. MacDonald’s first career goal for UBCO evened the match at 1-1.

Nikhil Reddy, now a relative veteran midfielder for the Heat, contributed an assist on the goal.

Up next for the Heat (1-3-0) is the Saskatchewan Huskies (4-2-0) on Friday at Nonis Field in Kelowna.
