Canucks erase 2-goal deficit, beat Calgary 5-3

CALGARY — Defenceman Jalen Chatfield scored once and added two assists as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Calgary Flames 5-3 Wednesday in pre-season action.

Chatfield, 21, was signed by Vancouver as a free agent last March after playing three junior seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires.

Anton Rodin, Brock Boeser, Nikolay Goldobin and Jake Virtanen also scored for Vancouver (2-1-0). The Canucks roster was comprised almost entirely of prospects with all the club’s veterans at the 2017 NHL China Games exhibition with the Los Angeles Kings.

Tanner Glass, Ryan Lomberg and Mark Jankowski scored for Calgary (0-3-0), which also had several youngsters, but did feature veterans such as Mikael Backlund, Michael Frolik and Kris Versteeg.

Vancouver entered the second period down 3-1 but tied it on goals by Boeser and Goldobin. Chatfield helped set up both.

At 2:14, Boeser burst over the blue line, cut laterally across the slot and fired a shot between Jon Gillies’ pads.

At 13:47, Goldobin knocked the puck over the line after Gillies partially stopped Michael Chaput’s rebound from the slot. Chatfield had the original shot.

Vancouver took the lead at 17:08 when Virtanen slipped around Brett Kulak, took the puck to the net and beat Gillies short-side with a perfect shot over his shoulder.

Boeser, Virtanen and Goldobin are all firstround picks. Boeser and Virtanen taken by Vancouver in 2015 and 2014 respectively. Goldobin, a Sharks first rounder in 2014, was acquired at the trade deadline last year from San Jose for veteran Jannik Hansen.

Thatcher Demko went the distance in goal for Vancouver, stopping 23-of-26 shots faced.
