Woman handed 8-month term for stabbing

-

A woman convicted of stabbing another young woman in downtown Kelowna in May has been sentenced to eight months in jail.

Courtney Mae Marciszyn, 22, was charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault causing bodily harm.

On May 13, Kelowna RCMP received a report of a stabbing near Bernard Avenue and St. Paul Street at 3:15 p.m.

Police said a young woman was walking with a friend when they were approached by a stranger.

“After a brief verbal interaction with that woman, the two young women walked away,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “Within seconds, the victim screamed out in pain and immediately realized she’d been stabbed in the back by the unknown woman, who fled the area on foot.”

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of a non-lifethreatening injury.

About 45 minutes later, the attacker turned herself in at the Kelowna police station.

Charges of assault causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose were dropped by the Crown, and Marciszyn was found guilty of assault with a weapon.

Marciszyn was sentenced to eight months in jail. With credit for time served, she will spend 33 more days in prison.

She was also sentenced to two years’ probation.
