The Kelowna Skating Club made an impact at the B.C. and Yukon championships in Parksville recently.

The KSC had 21 skaters participating at the Sectionals, which served as the provincial championships, as well as a qualifying round for national events. The local contingent more than held their own, winning six medals.

A highlight of the week occurred in the Novice Women’s division, as local skaters took three of a possible four medals.

Leading the way was 13 year-old Daria Carr with a personal-best score of 119.30 and the provincial title. The OKM student stormed back from a third-place standing after the short program to win the free program, which included four successful triple jumps. Carr is the reigning Canadian pre-novice champion.

Kelowna’s Vienna Harwood finished in third place overall with a personal-best score of 116.12. Harwood also captured the event’s Artistic Award.

Winning the pewter medal (fourth place) was Mikayla Kramer, in a field of 20 skaters.

At the Junior Women’s level, Kelowna had a pair of skaters on the podium.

Emma Bulawka won the short program, but finished second overall in a close finish. The 14year-old Aberdeen Hall student won the Artistic Award, and is last season’s Canadian Novice Women’s silver medalist.

Kelowna’s Olivia Gran finished third overall. Gran, 14, is also a former national medalist. Both Bulawka and Gran have represented Canada internationally.

At the Juvenile Women’s level, Ava Sanderson lost a photo finish in the under-14 division. Her score of 28.91 would leave her 0.14 of a point shy of the bronze medal.
