Skating rink on Boucherie Road

-

Dear Editor: Everyone who has ever travelled Boucherie Road between Stuart Road and Highway 97, knows how treacherous it can be if there is even a hint of ice on the road.

On Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m., we were on our way to church when we crested the top of the hill just past Stuart when we realized, too late, that Boucherie was a skating rink.

From that moment on, we were merely passengers on a big, red toboggan. We bounced off the curbs a few times and finally bounced right across the stupid boulevard that our wonderful council thought was such a great beautification on our “wine trail.”

Finally, we came to a rest just off the road, leaning up against two wonderful small bushy trees, and having narrowly missed colliding with a fire hydrant.

I say “wonderful bushy trees,” because had they not given us the restraint, we would have rolled over the 10 - 15-meter bank and collided with a home just below Boucherie Road at that point and probably suffered casualties by the driver plus two other passengers.

We were not alone in this dilemma, as at least four others cars collided at exactly the same place before I was able to run up the hill and divert further unsuspecting drivers of the dangers ahead.

In conclusion, there are two points I would like to make.

1. Where was the reliable West Kelowna road maintenance crew when every indication was that this piece of road would be covered in ice? Mere common sense would require the road to be sanded by at least 8 a.m.

2. Thanks be to God for the protection offered by those two bushy trees and for guiding us past that fire hydrant.
