Middle school students run a French cafe

- By HOLLY LAYMAN

Alexa, Daniel, Brett, and I started our café project in October.

Our project is an assignment where groups of four students at a time run a French cafe in the mornings at our school.

For the next two weeks, we listened to many guest speakers, including Dr. Kyleen Myrah from Okanagan College’s Business Department, as well as people from the district who specialize in healthy foods and French culture.

This project encompassed the subjects Math, French, Careers, and Health.

We used math and social responsibility skills when we went to the grocery store and had to calculate how much we would spend, based on the food items’ prices.

After that, we had to account for items going on sale and figure out which stores actually sold their products for less.

We used our French language and communication skills when we were running the café.

Although many of our customers only spoke English, we were able to communicate with the ones that spoke French using the vocabulary we collaborated on with our Grade 7 French Immersion students.

Of course, creative and critical thinking were always part of the process as we made posters, calculated estimates, and chose music to play at our café.

This is one of the many all-inclusive projects that I have been a part of in the learning community;

I hope other children will be able to have the same amazing experiences in the future!
