Bring back death penalty

-

Dear editor: This is the second time this year that I’ve written to the Attorney General for B.C. asking to recall and bring back the death penalty to anyone who murders a man, woman or child.

Just a few days before Christmas 2017, a woman and her two children were murdered in Kelowna, just about the same time two young children were murdered in Oak Bay.

Our families and homes are no longer safe places from murderers. Murderers know they will only get life in prison for 20 years with a chance of early parole through the appeal process. Life in prison should be till they die in prison.

When are we going to stand up for family safety, a safe place to live for everyone. If a murderer knows they will receive the death penalty if convicted, that will deter their intent to kill.

This was the case many years ago in B.C. when we had the death penalty. There were very few murders. They knew that they would die themselves if they killed anyone.

One woman and four children in one week — what’s happening?

We have to deal with domestic violence quickly.

Free room and board for 20 years — they won’t have to work, and free health, dental and recreational, even guided outings. Along with this comes visitor rights, conjugal visits, free legal services, free television, video, internet, and no heating, gas, or insurance bills.

As Canadians, we’ve become cowards and can’t find the courage to bring back the death penalty. What about the little children who had to experience such a brutal death and a life cut short? Mel Gauthier West Kelowna
