Young men and women in Grades 9 to 11 can find out more about the 2018 West Kelowna Youth Ambassador program at one of two information sessions planned for prospective candidates in January.

The sessions will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 22 and 29 at the Heritage Retirement Residence at 3630 Brown Rd. in West Kelowna.

Under the umbrella of the Westside Celebration Society, the West Kelowna Youth Ambassador program prepares teens to represent our community throughout British Columbia through a Àve-month program that will develop their abilities, skills and knowledge.

In response to requests from pervious candidates, Ricki Morin, chair of the ambassador program, has added more social time to this year’s program, including a barbecue, pool party with pizza, beach party and rock climbing. “It will be a lot of fun,” said Morin. Along with learning the history of West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation, etiquette and dancing, the young people will gain life skills including resume writing, simple banking, self defence, Internet safety, basic vehicle maintenance, cooking, nutrition and wellness.

Candidates will receive an eight-week course on public speaking from Westside Toastmasters, which will sharpen their communication and interview skills.

Throughout the program, the young people will volunteer at functions and community events.

Candidates will be judged in a number of events including a talent competition, inspirational fashion show, speech competition and impromptu question as well as a personal interview with the panel of judges.

The 2018-19 ambassadors will be announced at pageant night, June 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Westbank Lions Community Hall. This year’s theme will be Super Heroes of the World.

The ambassador team will represent our community travelling with adult chaperones to events throughout B.C., including Quesnel, Kamloops, Nanaimo, Castlegar, Revelstoke and White Rock.

Those who are interested in the program but can’t make a meeting can go to the West Kelowna Ambassadors Facebook page or contact Morin at 250-768-7471 or rick2547 @telus.net to arrange for a more convenient date.

The ofÀcial candidates will be introduced Feb. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Heritage.
