Dear editor: The law be damned. There is Mental Health and there is mental health.

If a person meanders down the street shouting blasphemies to a god or demon that no one else can see or hear, that is Mental Health problem.

If a person, despite being surrounded by a loving family and a caring community decides to kill themselves (Robin Williams) that is a mental health problem.

If a man in his late 50s (me) who wasn't doing too well mentally and was hearing voices telling him to kill his wife, that's a mental health problem.

If a person on a bus kills a sleeping kid and removes his head, that's a mental health problem. If a man kills his three little kids to get back at his wife, that's a mental health problem. And if a man kills his two young daughters to get back on his wife and then makes a feeble attempt to kill himself, that’s a mental health problem.

It’s the Canadian injustice system that has the mental health problem.

I don't care if Mother Teresa or the Mormon Tabernacle choir is whispering to you in your sick mind. If you kill someone, you go away. You get put away forever and you are done, no getting put away for a few months then released to once again terrify the family and the public because some overpaid shrink will connive with a gutless Canadian judge and convince him or her that if you just pop these few pills you will once again be an upstanding member of the community..

Despite what your highly paid shrink may tell the judge, you did have a choice.

In the beginning of your illness way back when, when only you knew, you had a choice. You had a choice to get help.

I can’t imagine what it would be like for the mother and family to lose those kids and my heart truly goes out to them, Don Smithyman
