Meeting hardly “a black eye”

-

Dear editor: Re: “Cops called in to keep crowd under control,” (Daily Courier, Jan. 11).

Whilst I do not criticize staff and the mayor for taking that step based on the situation that developed, I do take issue with the mayor calling it a “black day for Peachland.”

I am very proud that so many people in this community felt the need to be part of a process that will define the look of our town.

On any issue it is easy to see supporters as dedicated citizens and opponents as the unruly mob. Actually, the vast majority of those in attendance, and those who wanted to be in attendance, were very respectful of the situation.

The process of approving this project was flawed and a five-storey building on our lakeshore is in conflict with the official community plan.

However, members of council could be forgiven for giving its support based on the attendance at the public hearing on June 13.

Depending on what happens at the Jan. 30 public hearing for the required (but late) change to the OCP, it may be impossible to continue to suggest that the community supports the project.

If the community shows up in opposition, it will be an opportunity for members of council to show the fortitude to vote against five storeys. When this bylaw goes to third reading, residents will have a chance to find out if their councillors represent the people, or just the people in the development business.

It will be no less than a watershed moment in the history of Peachland.
