Massive development proposed for Campbell Rd.
A massive waterfront development proposed for West Kelowna would include 15-storey towers, a 180-room hotel, 216 condos, 86 townhomes, a winery, and marina.
The would-be builder describes the Campbell Road project, called Blackmun Bay Village, as high-quality and sensitively designed to Àt into the environment.
"Our vision for the site offers the opportunity to introduce an innovative development concept in West Kelowna that would offer high-quality, resorttype accommodations along the shore of Okanagan Lake, products currently found only in two locations in Kelowna," Samuel Alatorre of IBI Group writes in a letter to West Kelowna city council.
City planners were to recommend at Tuesday's meeting council not embrace the project as currently envisioned.
"The proposal involves a level of residential and tourist commercial density that is not currently supported (by) the official community plan," municipal staff write in their report to council.
"The proposal is inconsistent with the neighbourhood character, which is predominately large rural lots or single family dwellings, and does not complement the (area's) type, form, scale, and character," staff say.
City planners suggested council begin considering the project, but only if the proposed hotel is limited to four storeys in height.
The development is planned for 2211 Campbell Rd., with its northern edge being the boundary between the City of Kelowna and the Westbank First Nation.
