Question on gun violence

- JAMES MILLER James Miller is valley editor for Okanagan Newspaper Group.

I’d like to know how many parents and grandparents — if any — who lost children in the horrible Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting tragedy believe that U.S. gun laws are adequate? How many of the NRA executive members have lost children to gun violence? Damnit people, think.

There’s a good letter to the editor today about how Olympic hockey is still awesome, even minus the NHL’s top players. When minor leaguers and semi-pros used to play in the Olympics, who could forget one of the greatest moments in the history of the Winter Games? Miracle on Ice, Lake Placid, 1980. The Americans were seeded sixth but went on to win the hockey gold medal. Even for Canadians, it was an incredible moment. They were a group of scrubs that came together as a team. All hail Herb Brooks.

Why is mixed doubles curling — a sport curlers were figuring out as they went along — an Olympic sport, but golf is not?

Coming this Christmas, a Star

Wars stand alone film about the early years of Han Solo. Ron Howard directs. Attention Lucasfilm, please do not make a prequel to the Jar Jar Binks story.

Country singer Mindy McCready was gone far too soon.

Major League Baseball is the only professional sports all-star game that’s worth watching. The others are a waste of time, especially the NFL’s Pro Bowl, followed by the NBA all-star game as a close second.

Thinking back to this month’s Super Bowl, great credit is due to the Philadelphia Eagles. They showed up to win. They were aggressive, they gambled on third down and they went for it. They weren’t happy just to be there in the big game.

With that said, Tom Brady is still one of the game’s greatest quarterbacks ever.

The song “Philadelphia Freedom” by Elton John and Bernie Taupin was inspired by Billie Jean King. Her tennis team was the Philadelphia Freedoms and Elton promised his friend he’d write a song for her. I doubt she ever imagined Elton would take the single to No. 1.

You heard it here first. I predict the federal election in South Okanagan West Kootenay in 2019 will be a three-way rematch between Richard Cannings (NDP), Marshall Neufeld (Conservative) and Connie Denesiuk (Liberal).

True story: The now-defunct Rhinoceros Party of Canada was one of the first parties to be gender-neutral. They held a national convention in Strathroy, Ont. (near London), which is in Middlesex County, because they wanted to remain “gender neutral.” I miss the Rhinos. Those people were funny.

Attention fans of Joe Fries. Penticton’s city editor will be back to work, Tuesday, after two weeks of paternity leave. Thanks to reporter Dale Boyd for his hard work, holding down the news department all on his own.
