Coyotes pull ahead of Chiefs

-

Home ice has meant everything so far in the Okanagan Division final series.

Connor Onstein’s second goal of the game with 2:40 to play broke the tie and gave the Osoyoos Coyotes a 4-3 victory over the Kelowna Chiefs in KIJHL playoff action on Monday at the Sun Bowl Arena.

Osoyoos took a 3-2 lead and was in position to wrap it up Tuesday with a first road win for either team in the best-of-seven series. That result was not available at press time.

If a Game 7 is required, it goes tonight at 7:35 p.m. at the Sun Bowl.

Hunter Johnson and Jack McNamara also scored for the Coyotes, who overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit.

Myles Mattila scored twice and Brett Witala netted the other goal for the Chiefs. The game was tied 3-3 after 40 minutes.

Daniel Paul made 27 saves for the Coyotes and Joseph Mcleod stopped 36 shots for the Chiefs.

Two other division finals — both in the Kootenay Conference — did come to an end on Monday.

The Kimberley Dynamiters beat visiting Columbia Valley Rockies 5-2 to take the Eddie Mountain Division final 4-1, while the Nelson Leafs posted a 5-2 home-ice win over Castlegar Rebels to win the Neil Murdoch Division final 4-1.

Kimberley opens at home against Nelson in the Kootenay Conference championship series.

In the Okanagan-Shuswap Conference, Doug Birks Division final, the Revelstoke Grizzlies edged the visiting 100 Mile House Wranglers 5-4 in overtime Monday to take a 3-2 series edge. Game 6 was played Tuesday in 100 Mile, with Game 7, if necessary, tonight in Revelstoke.
