Filling thousands of Easter eggs

- By BARB AGUIAR

Many hands make light work and a team of volunteers from Re/Max and their families worked quickly Wednesday afternoon filling 12,000 brightly coloured plastic eggs with candy and chocolate in preparation for the Eighth Annual Easter Egg Scramble set for April 1 in West Kelowna.

The popular Easter Sunday family event, which attracts between 3,000 to 4,000 people, takes place from noon to 2 p.m. with the egg hunt for children 10 and under starting at 1 p.m. sharp.

The egg hunt is divided into three areas — one for those two years and younger, one for children three to four years old and one for five-to 10-year olds.

Most of the plastic eggs contain candy or chocolate, but 12 special eggs have a ticketed golden egg inside for a prize Easter basket of goodies put together by Gift Baskets by Joan.

Along with the egg hunt, families can enjoy free games and activities, face painting and a visit with the Easter Bunny.

As well, there will be hotdogs and refreshments by donation and a raffie with prizes.

Families are asked to bring their Easter baskets and a food item for the Central Okanagan Community Food Bank.

Volunteers for the food bank will be on hand to collect food and monetary donations.

The Easter Egg Scramble raises over $5,000 each year for the food bank at a time when the food bank’s inventory is depleting after the Christmas food drives.

According to Teri Kanner, executive assistant at the Central Okanagan Community Food Bank, the most needed items at the food bank are small peanut butter, wholesome cereal, tea, coffee, canned vegetables, fruit juice, diapers in sizes 2, 5 and 6, crackers and Boost or Ensure. Cash donations are welcome too. Memorial Park is located by the Johnson-Bentley pool at 3737 Old Okanagan Highway in West Kelowna.

Parking is available off Gellatly Road at Carrington, behind the A & W.
