The Evil Within 2 a perfect sequel

- SASCHA HEIST

The Evil Within 2, Rated M for Mature: (XBox One,PS4)

The sequel to the horror masterpiece Evil Within is here and is even more satisfying than the first game. The game visuals look better than ever with each monster and creature looking more terrifying than the next.

The game’s sound design — like the visual — is fantastic. From the background sounds to the voice acting, all are as engrossing as you would expect from a horror title.

The second game has the you playing the ex-cop Sebastian Castellanos, who is back from the first game. While the first game had the player just following a case, this time around you have a more personal connection. Sebastian is left searching for his daughter after he thought she died from a massive house fire, but appears to be in the STEM world. The game is a third-person survival horror game.

Unlike the first game, the pacing of this one is perfect. The game is mostly set in the town of Union. Union is an idyllic town created by the Mobius company. This town is set in an alternate reality created by the Mobius corporation. The world of Union has been overtaken by a deranged serial killer and creatures.

The team at Tango Gameworks did an amazing job having Union feel like a truly inhabited town. Each of the homes have closets littered with debris, plates on tables and more. These little details help each house feel different and that real people once lived there. The town is complete with houses, stores, a diner, and more.

The game play is classic survival horror, you can’t just go in guns blazing. In most cases, players are better off sneaking past enemies. The game’s screen shows eyes that widen when the player is spotted by an enemy. The game’s enemies are very fast making enemy confrontations that much more frightening.

The game’s mutated enemies were once humans turned into these gruesome creatures. If you sneak behind enemies that haven’t spotted you, you perform a stealth one-hit kill on most enemies. If you choose to fight the enemies face to face, steady aim and lots of ammo is required.

The defeated enemies will turn into puddles that drop everything from ammo or green gel that is used for upgrading the character. The player can upgrade the weapons which can increase different aspects of the weapon such as reloading, power, etc.

One of the biggest complaints from the first game was there was little exploration allowed. The developer addressed this by the game being set in a town that lets you explore a wide-open area. This allows the player to choose different ways to approach enemies or explore locations. The player is actually rewarded by taking time, exploring the city with crafting items, ammo and more.

The new open area will give players side quests that will give more information about the inhabitants and the team sent it to clean it up.

The pacing is another plus in this sequel. No matter the level you’re playing, the pacing and general angst is still there. The boss battles are a challenge and a blast to find out each one’s weakness and the best way of defeating them.

The game always throws something at you and you never feel the levels are there for filler to increase the story length.

The Evil Within 2 shows what a sequel can become if the developers listen to the issues of the first game. The Evil Within 2 gets a 10/10.
