Take a river cruise in Asia

-

River cruising isn’t just for European rivers

Europe is where many first-time river cruisers initially experience this way of travelling, many seeking a more intimate experience after cruising on the giant ocean-bound ships.

But Europe is not the only part of the world where you can try a river cruise.

More and more Canadians are discovering the charms of river cruising: sailing through picturesque scenery, exploring ashore by day and enjoying delicious meals on board by night.

Avalon Waterways, part of the worldwide Globus group of brands, has its roots in Europe where it operates a sleek fleet of vessels along some of the great waterways of the world such as the Danube, Seine and Rhine Rivers. These have proven so successful that the company has expanded into other regions including Southeast Asia.

“We offer the best combination for discovering this exotic part of the world,” says Stephanie Bishop of Avalon’s Canada office. “We offer sparkling new ships, built especially for us, that accommodate just 36 passengers and 24 crew. Each day ashore, our guides introduce you to the local culture and shepherd you through bustling markets and the busy streets.” Other cultural insights for Avalon passengers such as cooking classes, private dance performances, visits to temples and even a local farmer’s home are included.

On board, you’ll have the choice of local or Western dishes, each featuring fresh local ingredients.

Avalon offers a host of cruises, ranging from 13 to 21 days which include hotel stays at the beginning and end of the vacation. Visit Vietnam and Cambodia, cruising along the Mekong River. Or combine those two countries with Bangkok on the Ultimate Southeast Asia and Majestic Mekong itinerary.

Avalon will even take you to Myanmar for cruises along the Irrawaddy River.

Each Avalon ship in Southeast Asia — the oldest being three years old — features the company’s Panorama Suites with floor-to-ceiling windows which open wide to give the effect of an open-air balcony, bringing in the sights and sounds ashore to you. Avalon’s Panorama Suites have been named the best river cruise staterooms in the world for three years in a row by CruiseCritic.com.

Avalon has special offers for Canadians, including early-booking bonuses offers on its Southeast Asia cruises.
