Big White wraps up season in Revelstoke
The Big White Ski Club had a great showing at their final race of the year, the TECK Okanagan zone finals at Revelstoke Mountain on April 7 and 8.
The event attracted 152 racers and the first day featured the giant slalom.
Big White’s Liv Willoughby took first place in the under-12 division, winning by almost four seconds, which was quite significant in a sport of one-hundredths of a second. The other U12 top-10 finishers from Big White were Taryn Schlock, Tabitha Taylor and Reese Swift.
The races shifted to slalom on the second day, and the U12 girls fared very well again with four BWSC members in the top 10: Kael Oberlander was on the podium in third, Schlock placed seventh, Taylor finished eighth and Samantha Hveding was ninth.
Emily Veitch and Lily Duff improved on their second run by two seconds.
For the U12 boys, Callum SuttonMacmillan had a seventh-place finish in slalom. Oliver Baron, Sacha Jirasek and Jacob Godwin (U10) put some nice runs together over the weekend as well.
In the U14 girls division, Kiera Swift, from the BWSC, was on the podium both days, placing third for giant slalom and slalom. Her teammate Shayna Little skied to a sixthplace finish in the giant slalom.
The U14 boys slalom had five BWSC members in the top 10: Finley Cashin in fourth, Ben Hare in sixth, Takoda Ito in eighth, Johnny Ekinci in ninth and Simon Yanow in 10th.
Toni Willoughby had a ninth-place finish in the U16 giant slalom, while William Little placed eighth and Tristen Peter won the most improved skier.
The weekend was a nice close to the 2017-18 ski season. Farewell to the club’s “Bermuda ski members” Tyler-Julia and Peter Komposch as well as Maggie and Oliver Baron.
