A West Kelowna man charged with attempted murder in a 2016 shooting will spend more than seven years in jail.

On Aug. 2, 2016, police were called to a shooting on Hudson Road near Highway 97 at 10:14 p.m.

They said a man on a bicycle with a gun pulled up beside a car and shot several times at a 48year-old Kelowna man inside the vehicle.

The victim suffered injuries that were serious, but not life threatening.

During the incident, the vehicle hit the cyclist and the car came to a rest after striking a utility pole.

The cyclist fled, but police dogs found him hiding nearby and arrested him.

“The RCMP believe that this was a targeted incident, not a random attack,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a news release at the time.

Tyrone Reynolds McGee was charged with several firearmsrelated offences.

The following month, he was charged with attempted murder.

On Monday, McGee was sentenced to 10 years in jail. With credit for time served, he will spend seven years and 162 days in jail, according to court documents.

He was also ordered to pay a $100 victim surcharge and was issued a lifetime firearm ban.

The firearms charges were stayed by the Crown.

According to the Vancouver Sun, the shooting victim, Reginald Purdom, was a key witness in a U.S. drug conspiracy case targeting another B.C. man at the time.

That case wrapped up last year.
