Spring makes everyone feel a little better

- By FRANKIE KUSHNER

Welcome spring – a transitional season that symbolizes a phenomenal renewal of new life, of growth and an excellent time to contemplate our own health and well being.

We need to take action focusing on our health’s physical and mental well being by inventorying our diets, exercise, and stress levels.

Spring is about opportunity – a time to strengthen our belief in ourselves to overcome obstacles and to make decisions we have been putting off.

Think positively! It is a gift to yourself.

Research has shown we can actually change the circuitry of our brains by pairing a negative thought with something positive however small.

Spring is a time for cultivating courage and optimism, and strengthening our powers by over powering the greatest obstacles of all which is our own fear.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

— The public is invited to celebrate the season at our pancake breakfast scheduled for Sunday, April 29, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cost: $4 per person.

NOTICE: Our annual AGM and Luncheon is slated for Tuesday, May 22. Doors open at 11 a.m. for election of ofÀcers – followed by a noon luncheon.

Cost of the luncheon is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. The dress theme is sock-hop, 1950s and ’60s.

We welcome anyone 50 or over to experience any program of their interest at our centre. It’s the beginning of a new Àscal year and time for membership renewals. We welcome new members anytime and the membership fee of $20 per year is a prerequisite due as of April 30.

Our facility has a maximum capacity of just over 100 persons. Please keep that in mind when intending to attend an event of your choice so that you don’t miss out. Unfortunately we are confronted with limited parking spaces. If at all possible, consider car pooling to avoid congestion.

Our Activity Centre would not exist had it not been for our volunteer executive and board of directors. The strength of an organization is entirely dependent upon the strength of the team.

Several key positions are open and we urge all members attend the Tuesday meetings and earnestly consider the invaluable personal beneÀts of taking on one of the available team volunteer positions.

Statistically, volunteerism at the senior level has increased moods, managed depression, improved health, lowered stress levels, enriched people’s sense of purpose, and assisted in the management of chronic illnesses though emotional well being by developing interpersonal relationships.

In conclusion I leave you with this thought: If I do nothing, will my situation change? Months from now will I regret not participating?
